Kristen is a self-taught fiber artist from St. Louis, MO who took her love for hand embroidery to the next level by founding Gulush Threads in 2013.

Over the years, botanicals became the main focus of her work; taking a modern twist to the age-old medium using a variety of stitches, colors and textures.

In 2016, Kristen began teaching hand embroidery to the masses and has traveled all over the United States & Canada, sharing the art of Modern Embroidery with anyone willing to pick up a needle. For those who can’t make in-person workshops, she developed ways to teach those across the world by publishing her first book 200 Embroidered Flowers and launching her Youtube Channel! She has even filmed multiple online workshops with Brit & Co, Crafter’s Box, and Domestika.

In 2020, Gulush Threads was put on hiatus for health reasons, so Kristen could spend time working on her mental health as well as receiving care for her newly diagnosed chronic illness, fibromyalgia.

In 2021, Kristen Gula was invited by Domestika to film a workshop focusing on her journey as a neurodivergent, disabled, and queer woman. After much contemplation, Kristen decided to use the workshop to officially come out and, at the age of 34, began to fully accept herself and her many identities. This new confidence and acceptance was the deciding factor of her desire to begin focusing on how she could use her work (and platform) to help advocate for others in her communities (not just with art, but with her words and actions).

In 2022, Kristen relaunched her brand as herself; making Gulush Threads just one of the many parts of her mission towards creating and fostering a welcoming world for everyone. She still creates art while also putting more time into content creation via video, photography, design, & more.
